Essential
Components
" It is proteins that form the essential components of the
contractile
assemblies in the muscles, providing organisms
with the
capability of movement.
It is proteins which comprise the basic building blocks
of the tubular
system of the cell, providing the scaffold which
determines the
shape of the cell.
These same tubules also provide the cell with a system
of
interconnecting conduits for the movement of the cells'
constituents in
an orderly fashion around the cell.
In addition to forming the structural basis of the cells'
transport
system, it is proteins which also perform the role
of transporters,
selectively binding to certin chemicals at
particular
stations in the cell and then releasing them at
other sites.
Proteins also play the role of chemical meesengers,
being manufactured in
one location and then traveling
to another site where
they bind to some other molecule
to cause some
appropriate chemical response.
It is proteins which are also the receptors of chemical
messages. selectively
binding to "messenger molecules"
(which are often other
proteins) and responding to the
arrival of the
"message" by bringing about, generally via
specific interactions
with other proteins, changes to the
functional state of
the cell.
Proteins also form the gates and pumps that control
the passage of
innumerable different types of chemicals
through the cell
membrane, either by opening and closing
chemical channels or
by actively pumping chemicals from
one side to another.
The list of structural and functional properties of
proteins is virtually
endless. "
